Create, edit and delete pages
You can create an unlimited number of pages. When you create your account, you will always start with a single page called 'Home'. Next to that page's menu item, you see a '+ New' button. You can click that button to create a new page, with a title of your choice.
To modify an existing page, you first have to enter 'Customize mode'. You can do that by clicking 'Customize page' in the top right corner of the page. When you are in 'Customize mode', you can click the pencil icon next to a page title to modify it. The pencil icon of the current page will always be shown. To edit another page, hover over the item. The pencil button will then show up.
To remove a page, you can click the 'Delete Page' button in the 'Edit Page' dialog which shows up when you edit a page. Please make sure you are deleting the correct page, because the page can't be recovered when it's been deleted.
Click this to create a new page
Click this to enter 'Customize mode'
Click the pencil to modify / delete the page
Click this button in the 'Edit Page' dialog to delete the page
By default all pages are private and can only be accessed by you. Public pages can be accessed by everyone. To make a page public, you can check the 'Public?' box when creating or editing a page (see above for instructions).
When a page has been made public, a new box with information is shown on the page. This box shows your page's title (which can be different from the menu title), an optional description, an optional image and some general information. You can modify the public page's title, description and image when you are in 'Customize mode'. You can enter that mode by clicking 'Customize page' in the top right corner of the page. To modify the title or description, just click it. Type in the new information and press Enter to save it. To modify the image of a public page, click the small 'Edit' in the image or placeholder. Select a new image and it will automatically be processed and shown. You can remove the image by clicking the trash can icon.
In the public page box, you can click the 'Share' button to find out the URL of your public page. The dialog also contains buttons to share your page on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

Click 'Edit' to modify the public image or the trash can to delete the image.
Click this button to share your page with friends and family via its URL or social media
Now it's time to start managing the content of your pages! Pages consist of several blocks that are called lists. A list can either contain bookmarks or RSS feeds. This section will explain what bookmarks are and how you can add, modify and remove bookmarks from your lists.
A bookmark is a way to quickly navigate to websites that you use a lot. You can compare it to a real bookmark (the ones used with books), which allows you to quickly navigate to a certain page number. So, for example, if you often access Facebook, a bookmark can save you from typing 'facebook.com' every time you want to access your Facebook page. You only have to type in 'facebook.com' (the URL of Facebook) once, and then the next time you only have to click it to go to Facebook.
To add bookmarks to one of your lists, you first have to make sure there is a list on your page. If you've just registered an account, your 'Home' page will already contain several lists with interesting bookmarks. If you've created a new page, there will be no lists on the page by default, so you will have to add one. To add a list, first enter 'Customize mode'. Then, hover over the '+ Add List' block that will appear and select 'Add Bookmark List'. This will add a list with bookmarks to your page and focus the title field of the list. Type in a title (for example: Social Media) and press Enter. You can modify the title of an existing list by clicking on the title in 'Customize mode'. Now it's time to add bookmarks to the list!
To add a bookmark to a (new or existing) bookmark list, click '+ New Bookmark'. You will then be asked to enter the URL of the website. If, for example, you want to add Facebook.com to your bookmarks list, type in 'facebook.com' and press Enter. While you're typing the URL, STARTME will try to figure out the website you are trying to add and give you a list of suggestions. After pressing Enter, the bookmark is saved and the title of the website will be automatically loaded (this might take a few seconds, depending on the website). When you are done adding bookmarks, click 'Save page' in the top right corner of your page to save the changes and get out of 'Customize mode'. To try out your new bookmarks, click one of the links in the list you just added and see how STARTME opens the website for you!
To modify an existing bookmark's title or URL, click on the bookmark when you are in 'Customize mode'. A dialog will appear that gives you the opportunity to modify the bookmark's details. Click 'Save' to save the changes.
To delete a bookmark, hover over the bookmark in 'Customize mode' and click the small X to delete it. When you're done deleting bookmarks, click 'Save page' in the top right corner to commit your changes. Alternatively, you can delete a bookmark by clicking the 'Delete Bookmark' that is shown in the 'Edit Bookmark' dialog.
If you have multiple bookmarks, you can reorder them by dragging them when you are in 'Customize mode'. You can drag them by their handle, which is shown left of the icon and title of the bookmark. You can also drag bookmarks to other lists, if there are more bookmark lists on your page. Furthermore, you can also move lists around by dragging them by the handle shown above the list title. It's also possible to move a list to another page, by dragging it to another page title in the menu. After you have finished dragging lists and bookmarks around, click the 'Save page' button to commit your changes.
If you wish to remove a list altogether (whether it is a list of bookmarks or feeds), click the small X in the top right corner of the list when you're in 'Customize mode'. Don't forget to click 'Save page' to commit your changes. All the bookmarks or feeds in the list will also be removed, so make sure you are removing the correct list.

You now know how to add bookmarks to your lists. Adding RSS feeds to your pages is just as easy! This section will explain what an RSS feed is, how you can add them to your pages and how you can configure the feed settings.
An RSS feed contains news articles or other updates from a specific source. For example, most newspapers and news websites provide an RSS feed that will keep you updated with the latest news. By itself, an RSS feed is of hardly any use. But, an RSS feed reader can read the important information from the feed and present it to you in such a way that you can comfortably read the latest news. STARTME has an RSS feed reader built in, so lets put it to use!
RSS feeds are added to RSS feed lists. They cannot be added to bookmark lists. You can always identify an RSS feed list by the small RSS icon next to the list's title. To add an RSS feed list to your page, hover over the '+ Add List' block and click 'Add RSS list'. This will add a feed list to your page and ask you to provide a title (for example: Technology News). Press Enter to save the title.
Click '+ New RSS feed' to add a feed to a list. This works the same way as bookmarks. You can enter the RSS feed URL (it has to be a valid RSS feed!) or search for a common RSS feed. For now, we'll search for 'Technology', so enter that in the box. STARTME will provide you with a list of common feeds that have to do with 'Technology'. Select one and press Enter to add the feed to the list. Alternatively, you can copy and paste the URL of a custom feed (one that is not in the list of common feeds) into the box and press Enter to add it. The RSS feed URL has to be valid for it to work. You can often find RSS feed URLs of a website by looking for a specific RSS section. That section will then list the feeds of that website. Copy the URL of one of the feeds and paste it into the box to add the custom feed to the list. When the feed has been added, it will be read (this can take several seconds) and the articles will then be shown when you click 'Save page' and go out of 'Customize mode'.
A list can contain multiple feeds. By default the feeds will be split into multiple tabs and show 10 articles per page. The first article will be shown with an image and a summary (if they are available). To configure these settings, click the small cog icon in the top right corner of a feed list. You can modify these settings here. If you want to combine the feeds into a single list, where all items are sorted from new to old, check the 'Combine feeds' box. You can change the other settings in a similar manner.
Feeds will be updated automatically and new items will show when you refresh the page or you refresh the list. To refresh the list, click the small refresh icon in the top right of the list when you are not in 'Customize mode'. Modifying and removing a feed can be done in the same way as you would modify and remove bookmarks.
Click 'Add RSS list' to add feeds to a page
Multiple feeds will be split by default
Click the cog icon to modify feed list settings
Managing search engines
Refresh the articles of a feed by clicking the refresh icon
At the top of the page, you can find a search bar that will help you perform searches in different search engines. By default, you are provided with a list of common search engines that will help you speed up browsing. This section will explain the possibilities and configuration options of the search bar.
To start searching in the currently selected search engine, type your search query in the search box and press Enter (or click the search button). You will then be taken to the search engine's results. To change to a different search engine, click the button next to the search query field to open a dropdown menu of search engines. Click the search engine you want, fill in your query and press Enter to search in the newly selected engine.
Every time you switch to another page, your default search engine will be selected. To change the default engine, go into 'Customize mode' by clicking 'Customize page' and open the search engine dropdown. You will now see more options for every engine. The search engine with the filled in star button is the default engine. To switch to a different default engine, click the empty star button next to a search engine. The button will then show a solid star and is now your default search engine!
To hide a search engine from the list, click the small X button next to the engine. The engine's details will be greyed out and when you click 'Save page' to go out of 'Customize mode', you won't see the engine any more. To enable a hidden engine, click the V button next to an engine. The engines in the 'Default search engines' list cannot be removed completely, but can only be hidden.
You can also add custom search engines to the list. To do this, open the dropdown when you are in 'Customize mode' and start filling in the fields below 'Custom search engines'. You can give the engine a name and have to paste in the search URL. This is the URL of the search engine where the query is replaced by %s. For example, if you want to add DuckDuckGo as a search engine, go to duckduckgo.com and enter a search query. You will then be taken to the results. Copy the URL in your browser bar (for example: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=test) and replace 'test' with %s ('test' was the search query). When the engine is saved, you can use it like any other search engine and even make it your default search engine! To modify a custom search engine, click the title or URL, fill in the new data and press Enter. To delete a custom search engine, click the X button.
If you don't want to see the search bar at the top of every page, you can hide it by going to your account settings. See Settings
for more information.
Type in your query and press Enter to search
Click the button with the search engine icon to select another search engine
Select another search engine to start searching in that engine
Import and export
Click the empty star to make this the default search engine. Click the X button to hide it, and the V button to show it again
If you already have bookmarks or feeds in another browser or service, you can import all your data into STARTME to easily migrate from the other service. You can also export your bookmarks and feeds from STARTME so they can be used in another account or for another service. This section explains how you can import and export your data.
To import a list of bookmarks from another place (say, for example your browser) you have to create an HTML file of your bookmarks. Every bookmark manager and every browser supports this feature, and you should look in the bookmark manager's documentation for an explanation of how to do it. Once you have the HTML file with your bookmarks, you can start importing it into STARTME. To open the 'Import and Export' dialog, click the large cog icon in the top right corner of the screen and when the dropdown appears, click 'Import and Export'. In the dialog that opens you can select the HTML file with bookmarks you want to import and select a page into which the bookmarks will be imported. If you want to add the imported bookmarks to a new page, select that option in the dropdown and fill in a page title. The imported bookmarks will be added to lists that have the same name as the directory the bookmark is in. So, if you have 3 directories of bookmarks, you will end up with 3 lists that have the same title as the directory. After your bookmarks have been imported, you will be taken to the page that now contains the new bookmarks. Above the page you will see a box asking you if you want to save or undo the import. If the import doesn't work out as expected, you can click the 'Undo' button to undo any changes made when importing.
To import a list of feeds, you have to create an OPML file of your feeds. Every RSS reader has this option. When you have your OPML file, select it in the 'Import and Export' dialog, select a page to import to and click 'Import'. The feeds will be added to lists with the same title as the directories the feeds are in.
You can also export your bookmarks to an HTML file which can then be used to import your bookmarks somewhere else (or on another STARTME page!). To export your bookmarks, open the 'Import and Export' dialog, select the page you want to export the bookmarks of on the right (or select 'All pages' to export them all in one file), select 'Export bookmarks' and click 'Export'. After a few seconds, you will be asked to save an HTML file with your bookmarks.
Exporting feeds is done in the same way. Select the page you want to export the feeds from, select 'Export feeds' and click 'Export'. After a few seconds, you will be asked to save an OPML with your feed data. This file can then be imported into RSS readers (like RSSOwl) or into another STARTME page.
Click the cog icon in the top right corner to open a dropdown menu. Click 'Import and Export' to open the dialog
Select your HTML/OPML file, select a page to import to and click 'Import' to start importing your bookmarks or feeds.
Select which page you want to export, select whether you want to export bookmarks or feeds and click 'Export' to start exporting your data.
There are some account settings you can manage to change the way STARTME works. To open the 'Settings' dialog, click the cog in the top right corner to open a dropdown menu and select 'Settings'. There are multiple switches you can enable or disable. If you want to open links (bookmarks, feed articles, searches) in a new tab or window check 'Open links in new window'. If you want STARTME to show small website icons next to bookmarks, articles and feeds check 'Show favicons for websites'. If you want STARTME to show the search bar at the top of every page, check 'Show search bar at the top of pages'. Click 'Save' to save your changes. You can change these settings whenever you want, and any changes you make should be reflected immediately.
